With another refinery set to close next month, California will have lost nearly a third of its refining capacity in just six years. Meanwhile, gasoline consumption is falling by less than one percent per year.
That combination is adding stress to our fuel markets, leaving drivers vulnerable to price spikes and disruptions at the pump. But it also forces our state to rely on foreign suppliers for the gasoline we need – adding even more risk and uncertainty to our fuel supply.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
As a new video from Californians for Energy Independence argues, California can produce the oil and refine the cleaner-burning gasoline we need here at home:
“That would let us maintain control over our fuel supply, support good-paying jobs, and keep billions of dollars in our local communities while protecting working families from even higher prices at the pump.”
California will continue to rely on gasoline for many years to come – and while we do, where it comes from matters.
